# Allowed usage

> Choose whether an agent stays available for direct chats and other agents, for direct chats only, or for other agents only.

> [!NOTE]
>
> Workspace admins set allowed usage from the agents table in workspace settings. The agent's owner and editors set it from the agent editor.

Allowed usage decides whether people can open an agent in a direct chat and whether other agents can attach it. You set it on each agent. It is not offered for projects.

## Set allowed usage

1. Go to [Workspace Settings → Products → Agents](https://app.langdock.com/settings/workspace/products/agents)
2. Find the agent and click the **⋮** menu
3. Select **Allowed usage**
4. Choose **Default**, **Direct only**, or **Only as a subagent**

As the agent's owner or an editor, open the agent in the editor, click the **⋮** menu, and select **Allowed usage**. Templates do not offer this entry.

* **Default** keeps direct chats and use by other agents. Sharing settings still control who can access the agent.
* **Direct only** stops other agents from adding this agent. People can still open a direct chat with it. Existing connections stay until you remove them.
* **Only as a subagent** keeps the agent available to other agents and turns off direct chats.

Owners and editors can still find, edit, and test an agent set to **Only as a subagent**. People with **User** access do not see it in search or pins. It stays out of **Highlighted**, **Recently used**, **Recently shared with you**, and **Popular in your workspace**.

Click **Save**. When you choose **Direct only** and the agent already has connections, click **Continue** instead. That opens the connections step. **Continue** and **Back** do not save.

## Existing connections

**Direct only** leaves agents that already use this agent in place. The connections step lists those parent agents. Active parents open in a new tab. Deleted parents show **Deleted** and cannot be opened. If you are not a workspace admin, the list shows only the parent agents you can access. The rest appears as **And N more**.

Leave **Also remove existing connections** off and click **Save** to keep them. Turn it on and click **Save and remove** to delete those connections from drafts and every saved version in the workspace. No other draft changes are published. Removal cannot be undone.

If the agent has no existing connections, the choice saves immediately and this step does not appear.

> [!WARNING]
>
> An agent set to **Only as a subagent** cannot be opened in a new direct chat. **Start chat** stays disabled, conversation starters stay hidden, and the chat input is disabled. This applies in the web app and the mobile apps. The editor preview still lets owners and editors test the agent, and conversation starters stay visible there.
